4 Ways To Avoid Heat Damage

4 Ways To Avoid Heat Damage

Direct heat from blow dryers and flat irons can cause breakage and a loss of your natural curl pattern. But with these tips you can assess and protect the health of your child’s natural hair.

1. Know Your Child’s Natural Hair

Every child’s hair is different.  It is important for you to know their hair and its heat tolerance. Doing a hair assessment will help you determine whether you should introduce heat to their regimen. Here are three things to consider before applying heat to your child's hair:

1. Identify the hair’s condition from root to end by looking at hair texture (finer hair textures can be more easily damaged by heat)

2. elasticity (hair stretches without breaking easily)

3. damaged ends (as this could cause further breakage).

 2. Prepare the Hair

Prepare your child’s hair for heat styling by cleansing the hair with our Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo then follow up with our  Avocado & Banana Deep Conditioner during wash day. You can also apply a light protein treatment at this time. Moisturizing and deep conditioning will strengthen their natural hair. This will ensure that the hair cuticle is closed and coated for a smooth look.

To seal the moisture in apply a light leave-in conditioner before you flat iron the hair.

3.Use a Heat Protectant

Before applying heat to the hair, even with just a blow dryer, it’s always recommended that you use a heat protectant, which creates a barrier between your open hair and the heat.

4.Limit Heat Exposure

Start off on a lower heat setting then gradually work your way up to a higher setting. While styling take note on how the hair reacts or only use medium to low heat when styling. We never suggest using a heat setting that is higher than 350 degrees. The temperature is less for fine hair or hair that is weak and damaged.
