But as Ariel's journey shows, hair care is so much more than a routine—it's an opportunity to nurture identity, celebrate culture, build confidence, and show love. What began as uncertainty became a journey of learning, growth, and connection. Read on as Ariel shares how she went from fear to confidence while caring for her daughters' beautiful textured hair.
1. What was your biggest challenge when it came to finding products?
My biggest challenge was finding products that were effective and worked well together, while also being clean and safe for children. There is so much information online that it can feel overwhelming, especially when you're new to caring for textured hair!
2. What has your child's hair journey taught you about embracing and celebrating their identity and culture?
It's taught me that hair care is an act of love, but it's also an act of respect. Caring for their hair means intentionally honoring a part of who they are. Foster care and adoption require children to give up so much of their life, so I wanted to make sure that my daughters maintained their identity and culture whenever possible.
3. What advice would you give to other foster or adoptive parents who may be caring for textured hair for the first time?
It's okay to admit you don't know everything. There is so much value in having the humility to ask for and accept help. There are tons of creators, hairstylists, and educators who are knowledgeable about textured hair. No one expects you to become an expert or professional overnight. But consistency, curiosity, and a willingness to learn go a long way.
4. Looking back on your journey, what are you most proud of when it comes to caring for your child's hair today?
I'm most proud that I didn't let my fear of getting it wrong stop me from learning. Because of that, I'll be able to teach my daughters how to care for their own hair as they grow up. I'm also proud that they are growing up knowing that their hair is worthy of time, care, and attention!
