Kid Jobs vs. Grown-Up Jobs
Kids can: measure cereal, stir (off heat), add food coloring, press mixture in pan, place candy eyes, help pipe mouths.
Grown-ups handle: stovetop melting, microwave melting, cutting, chocolate dipping, and hot items.
Instructions
- Melt & Tint: In a large saucepan over medium-low, melt coconut oil. Add marshmallows and stir until smooth. Tint the mixture Franken-green with food coloring.
- Mix: Remove from heat. Stir in cereal until evenly coated.
- Press: Press into a greased 13×9-inch pan. Lightly wet or oil your hands to prevent sticking. Let cool.
- Chocolate Hair: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips with shortening in 30-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth.
- Cut: Slice the cooled slab into 12 rectangles. Gently square the edges if needed.
- Dip: Dip the top of each rectangle into the melted chocolate for “hair.” Set on parchment to dry.
- Faces: Spoon remaining chocolate into a zip-top bag, snip a small corner, and pipe a straight line for a mouth.
- Eyes: Dab a little chocolate on the back of two candy eyes and press onto each square.
- Set & Serve: Let the chocolate harden (or chill briefly). Enjoy your little monsters!
Why Your Child Will Love Them
- Crunchy, chocolatey, and adorable on any party table.
- Kids love placing the eyes and piping the silly mouths.
- No-bake and fast—great for busy weeknights or class parties.
Notes & Allergy Tips
Gluten-free: many standard crispy rice cereals are wheat-free but not certified gluten-free. If you need GF, choose a certified gluten-free crispy rice cereal so everyone can safely enjoy a square.
Vegan option: use vegan marshmallows and dairy-free chocolate. Some vegan marshmallow brands include soy, so always read labels if you’re avoiding soy as well. Coconut oil or a soy-free shortening works well for melting chocolate.
Candy eyes: many store-bought candy eyes contain gelatin (not vegan). Try homemade icing eyes, pipe tiny chocolate dots, or use decorative craft eyes for looks only (remove before eating).
Safety first: brands and facilities can change. If you’re serving someone with food allergies, ask families to review every ingredient and share how you’ll prevent cross-contact in your kitchen.
Make-Ahead & Storage
- Make-ahead: Prepare up to 24 hours in advance.
- Store: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature for 2–3 days. (Chilling makes them firmer; bring to room temp before serving.)
