Reagan’s Wash Day Routine

Reagan’s Wash Day Routine

If you’re a mom of a curly-haired kid, you already know… wash day is never just wash day.
It’s detangling conversations, bathroom laughter, and sometimes a little negotiating about how long they have to sit still.

In our house, it’s also the moment we slow down and take care of Reagan’s curls together.

One thing we’ve learned over the years is simple: healthy ends make a big difference.
We trim Reagan’s ends about twice a year to keep her hair strong and prevent breakage. Those small trims help her curls stay full, soft, and easier to manage. It’s a simple step that keeps her hair looking fresh while protecting the length she’s worked hard to grow.

But trims are just the beginning. The real work happens on wash day — when we focus on scalp health, hydration, and building healthy habits that will stay with her for years.

Here’s what Reagan’s wash day routine looks like.

Step 1: Clarify the Scalp
We always start with a clarifying cleanse. Over time, sweat, oils, and styling products can build up on the scalp and make hair feel heavy or dry. Clarifying removes that buildup and creates a clean foundation so the rest of the products can actually do their job. Starting with a clean scalp also helps promote healthy hair growth and keeps curls feeling light and refreshed.

Step 2: Cleanse with Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo
After clarifying, we follow with our Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo. This gently cleanses the hair without stripping away the natural oils curls need to stay soft and healthy. Because Reagan’s scalp can sometimes be sensitive, using a moisturizing shampoo helps keep her scalp balanced while still getting her hair fully clean.

Step 3: Deep Condition + Hot Oil
Once her hair is clean, we move into the moisture phase of wash day. We apply our Avocado & Banana Deep Conditioner and pair it with a warm treatment of Nourishing Growth Oil. This combination helps restore moisture, soften curls, and strengthen strands while keeping the hair manageable throughout the week.

Step 4: Steam for 20 Minutes, Then Rinse
To help the conditioner and oil really penetrate the hair, Reagan sits under steam for about 20 minutes. Steam gently opens the hair cuticle so the nutrients from the conditioner and oil can soak deeper into the strands. This step boosts hydration and leaves her curls noticeably softer.

Step 5: Apply Moisturizing Leave-In Detangler on Soaking Wet Hair
After rinsing, we move into hydration and detangling. While Reagan’s hair is still soaking wet, we apply our Moisturizing Leave-In Detangler in sections. Applying leave-in to wet hair helps lock in moisture while adding slip for gentle detangling and reducing breakage.

Step 6: Blow Dry in Sections
Once her hair is detangled, we gently towel-dry and blow dry in small sections. Stretching the hair this way reduces tension and makes styling easier while protecting the strands.

Step 7: Seal with Mango Butter Soufflé Whipped Hair & Body Butter
The final step of wash day is sealing in moisture. We use a small amount per section, starting at the ends and working toward the roots. This helps prevent dryness, adds shine, and keeps her curls soft longer.

Keeping the Style Fresh Between Wash Days

Wash day sets the foundation, but maintaining moisture throughout the week is just as important.

  • Every 3–4 days: Lightly refresh hair with Moisturizing Aloe Refresher Spray to hydrate curls.
  • Once a week: Seal moisture with Nourishing Growth Oil.
  • When needed: Smooth flyaways with Hydrating Multi-Use Styling Foam.

Reagan’s go-to style has usually been braids, but lately we’ve been doing something a little different.

For the next 90 days, we’re embracing her natural hair even more. Between cheer and our busy schedules, we realized we had gotten away from consistently wearing natural styles. When I noticed Reagan becoming uncomfortable wearing her natural hair without added hair, it made me pause. My goal has always been for Reagan to understand that her hair is BE-YOU-TIFUL, just the way it grows from her scalp. So we started the 90-Day BE-YOU-TIFUL Challenge, where she’ll be wearing only natural hairstyles using our I Want It All Whole Collection Kit — no added hair.

Because at the end of the day, this routine isn’t just about curls. It’s about helping her see the beauty in what’s already hers.
